It is all well and good having water features, ponds and pools but you need to make sure that they are kept clean all year round. There is nothing worse than having a pool that has turned green due to it not being maintained. Ponds and water features add to the ambience of a garden, but that will be completely lost if you have not allowed the water to circulate and a slime residue has built up in the bottom! Besides the obvious use of chemicals to keep your water clear, you also need to make sure that you have a water filtration system that works properly.
Stagnant water breeds mosquitoes and many other forms of bacteria which is harmful to your health. Water will become stagnant if you do not have a water filtration system circulating the water on a regular basis. Look at this way, when you go to a dam or lake, if there are no ripples on the water it means that the water has become stagnant and is not safe to consume or swim in. The same applies to any type of water feature, pool or pond. If your pool pump is not in working order, the water in your pool will not be circulated and it will ultimately turn green. Ponds are not meant to be 100% clear as they are generally filled with water plants and fish; but this does not mean that a water filtration system is not needed.
Water features add another dimension to a garden. But that dimension will be totally lost if the water isn’t circulated. Have you ever gone to a nursery and seen a water feature that does not have water circulating through it? If your answer is yes, then just imagine having that slimy green water feature in your garden. If your answer is no, then you know that that water feature is being kept clean and clear due to the water filtration system in it. What the water filtration system does is pump clean water out the top of the feature thereby keeping a fresh circulation of water going through.
