Who would’ve thought that installing a pond could save your family from drowning in a digital world? If you or your children are spending every day locked to a digital device, whether for school, work, watching the news, or entertainment, a body of water in your own backyard could save you from the known negative effects of today’s high-tech environment.
A 2017 American Psychological Association report (pdf) points out that ‘just under half of all adults and 90% of young adults have become “constant checkers,” engaging with screens and social media all the time, which has vastly increased levels of stress—both when tech works and when it doesn’t.’
Stress not. It is good to know that countering the unavoidable impact of the technological age is as simple as a delightful pond in your own backyard.
Install a Pond for Goodness’ Sake
Wallace Nichols, marine biologist and author of the 2014 book Blue Mind notes in an interview with Quartz;
“People can experience the benefits of the water whether they’re near the ocean, a lake, river, swimming pool or even listening to the soothing sound of a fountain. Most communities are built near bodies of water not just for practical reasons, but because as humans, we’re naturally drawn to blue space…but even if you aren’t in an area where there is easy access to water, you can still experience [its] emotional benefits.”
Moving water generates negative ions – negative, in this context, being a positive thing! WebMD quoted from The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research, Pierce J. Howard, Ph.D. explaining;
“Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy. They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.”
We rest our case.
Indoor and Outdoor Pond Installation
Because installing a pond is not limited to the outdoors, schools, hospitals, government buildings, and office blocks can take advantage of indoor options.
WebMD also suggested that negative ions may account for increased levels of serotonin, the ‘happy chemical’ that uplifts moods. If walking past a pond in the entrance lobby helps scholars, professionals, and employees feel mentally and emotionally better. then install a pond and you have exactly that.
