Why, when we have so many choices for enhancing our homes, do we choose running water?
As a species, we recreate miniature fountains, waterfalls, rivers, and brooks in our gardens to mimic the spectacular examples found in the natural world.
You may be interested to know that this is no accident.
Water has always had an almost hypnotic draw for us humans; whether it is the sound of waves crashing on the beach, or the sound of raindrops on our roof.
While science has yet to tell us exactly why our brains respond positively to the sound of water, the evidence is clear that we do. One article commented that “water makes us feel calmer and more creative…and people who live near water report feeling less stress and better health.”
Studies have shown that the sound of moving water actually affects our brainwaves.
When we are deeply relaxed or asleep, our brains enter the Theta or Delta state. In this state, feelings of anxiety and stress are reduced – along with their associated medical issues such as hypertension.
Our slow brain waves also allow the parasympathetic nervous system to operate as it works to heal our bodies, restoring our chemical and metabolic balance.
With this in mind, we can see why so many people choose to install a water feature, such as a garden fountain, in their outdoor living space. The gentle sound of running water, along with the beauty of water plants, and the wildlife that flocks to your mini oasis, are wonderful reasons to install a fountain.
If you have been considering adding a water feature to complete your garden, we’d love to assist. We have been installing fountains in small gardens large commercial spaces for decades – and we know what looks good.
